van Gennep, Charles Arnold (1873–1957) An ethnologist of Dutch and French parentage whose Rites of Passage (1909) is a classic in the social anthropological study of ritual. He encouraged an ethnographic approach to the study of European folklore. See also RITES OF PASSAGE.
