formal structure
formal structure, formal organization A term first used by the Human Relations Movement for the managerial blueprint, organizational chart, or chain of authority and communication in an organization. It may be contrasted with the informal organization or system of human relations through which the organization actually operates, and which typically departs (sometimes widely) from the formal structure. See also ORGANIZATION THEORY.
