Yuri V. Romanenko

1944-

Russian cosmonaut who set an endurance record for manned space flight by remaining aboard the Mir space station for 326 days. A veteran of three other space flights, Romanenko showed that it is possible for people to live in space for prolonged periods and still return to function normally on Earth. The data collected during his stay in orbit and subsequent return to Earth is expected to prove important for the planning of future missions to Mars.
