Willis Haviland Carrier

1876-1950

American engineer and inventor who developed the formulae and equipment that made air conditioning possible. Carrier developed an apparatus for treating air that was both safe and non-toxic. It became the first air conditioner and was used to enhance comfort and improve industrial processes and products. In 1911, he disclosed his formulae to the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and it remains the basis for fundamental calculations used by the air conditioning industry.
