Sophia Louisa Jex-Blake

1840-1912

English physician who was responsible for 1876 legislation permitting women in Britain to accept medical degrees and to receive licenses to practice medicine. Jex-Blake studied medicine at Edinburgh University in Scotland and passed her exams, but the university did not allow women to accept medical degrees; she eventually qualified as a doctor in 1877. Jex-Blake also helped establish a medical school for women in London in 1874, and another in Edinburgh in 1886.
