Paul Julius Oswald Teichmuller

1913-1943

German mathematician who contributed to the field of geometric function theory. Teichmuller studied under Helmut Hasse at Göttingen, where he completed a thesis on linear operators on Hilbert spaces, then undertook further studies under Ludwig Bieberbach in Berlin. In a six-year period Teichmuller researched and produced some 34 papers and introduced quasiconformal mappings and differential geometric methods into complex analysis. An ardent Nazi, Teichmuller joined the German army in 1939 and was killed in battle in the Dnieper region of the Soviet Union.
