Norman Steenrod
Norman Steenrod
1910-1971
American mathematician whose work in topology led to many important discoveries. In particular, Steenrod was active in homology theory, including helping to define homology groups and elaborating on the concept of fiber bundles, an important concept in topology. Steenrod's most lasting contribution, however, may be the "Steenrod volumes," in which he compiled, classified, and cross-referenced many important papers in the field. This has proven an invaluable reference tool in this specialized field.
