First person to use radio waves to transmit telegraph messages. Mahlon Loomis overcame ground and weather obstacles by using aerials, which were held aloft by kites. His first radio wave telegraphy traveled 14 miles (22.5 km) between two mountains near his home in West Virginia. Loomis was granted the world's first wireless patent on July 20, 1872.
