Konrad Lorenz

1903-1989

Austrian zoologist who was a cofounder of ethology, the science of animal behavior. He received a medical degree in 1928 and a Ph.D. in zoology in 1933 from the University of Vienna. Thereafter he studied instinctive animal behavior in natural settings. In 1963 he wrote a book on human aggression as an instinctual behavior. He was corecipient of the 1973 Nobel Prize in medicine for his work in ethology.
