Jules Emile Péan

1830-1898

French surgeon who is regarded as one of the founders of modern gynecological surgery. He developed techniques of vaginal hysterectomy, ovariotomy, and gasterectomy. He invented the hemostatic forceps, a clamp device to stop bleeding during surgery. Péan performed the first operation to correct diverticulitis of the bladder, and he also practiced aseptic surgery, or surgery free of disease-causing microorganisms, before microorganisms were understood.
