French-Australian physician who discovered that the thymus gland is a part of the immune system. Miller made this discovery by removing the thymus in baby mice, subsequently noting that the mice failed to develop either white blood cells or lymph nodes. He also noted that the mice would then accept grafts that would otherwise have been rejected. This discovery helped advance understanding of the immune system greatly.
