Haldan Keffer Hartline
1903-1983
American biophysicist who was corecipient (with Ragnar Granit and George Wald) of the 1967 Nobel Prize in medicine for their work on the biochemical and electrical processes of vision. Hartline was the first to determine the mechanics of how the visual system nerves receive information and transfer it to the brain. His work contributed to advances in night-vision, pattern recognition, and motion-detection devices. He earned his M.D. in 1927 from Johns Hopkins University.
