Erwin Baur

1875-1933

German botanist who was one of the earliest advocates of Mendelian genetics in Germany. He organized some major genetics research institutes, including the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Plant Breeding and Genetic Research, where he did important experiments on genetic mutations. In the field of agriculture, he produced disease-resistant breeds of plants. He was an avid proponent of eugenics, the attempt to improve human heredity by controlling reproduction.
