thomas alva edison (1847–1931), who first developed the cylinder recorder, did so in an effort to communicate with the dead, not to record music. edison believed that the soul was composed of swarms of highly charged entities that lived in the cells, and that left the physical body after death, entering another cycle of life and becoming immortal.
