1878-1952

American physician, pathologist, and nutrition scientist who received his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1902, then spent the next 31 years as an Army medical officer. He discovered that emetine, the active ingredient of the ancient emetic ipecacuanha, is an amoebicide and therefore effective against amoebic dysentery. He proved that beriberi and pellagra are deficiency diseases and developed diet therapy for both. His other research concerned typhoid, whooping cough, leprosy, syphilis, sprue, scurvy, sanitation, and public health.
