Ammonius Saccus

175-242

Alexandrian Greek philosopher known as the founder of Neoplatonism, which was the culmination of seminal Greek philosophy and a real synthesis of previous Greek metaphysical philosophy. Either his writings are not extant, or he never left any from his reputed extensive teaching. Ammonius's most important disciple in the furthering of Neoplatonic thought was Plotinus, the dominate theorist of the philosophy and the teacher of Porphyry, who simplified Plotinus's Neoplatonic thought, which in turn influenced Macrobius and Augustine.
