reduction potential (electrode potential) A quantitative measure of the ease with which a substance is oxidized or reduced. It represents the voltage necessary to prevent the flow of electrons to or from a half-cell containing aqueous solutions of the oxidized and reduced forms of the test substance when it is connected to a hydrogen half-cell.
