Hyracodontidae
Hyracodontidae (order Perissodactyla, superfamily Rhinocerotoidea) One of three families of rhinoceroses, known as the ‘running rhinoceroses’. They were small, slender browsers, which first appeared in the Eocene and became extinct in the Lower Miocene. They inhabited the northern continents, and were possibly displaced by ancestors of the horse. They had teeth similar to those of rhinoceroses, but differed from them in having long legs and three toes on each foot (similar to those of contemporary horses).
