group translocation A mechanism that is widely utilized for the transportation of sugars across bacterial membranes and perhaps those of some higher cells. A donor compound is used to activate sugar molecules through the provision of a high-energy phosphate group. The activated sugar can thus more readily traverse the membrane. A number of membrane proteins have been implicated in the transfer process.
