Darling, SirFrankFraser (1903–79)A British ecologist and animal geneticist whose 1969 Reith Lectures for the BBC, ‘Wilderness and Plenty’ (published in 1970 with the same title) was influential in drawing attention to the relationship between humans and the natural environment. His ecological and social study in Scotland was published in 1955 as West Highland Survey and became a classic, as did his natural history book, The Highlands and Islands, written in collaboration with J. Morton Boyd and published in 1964. Darling was knighted in 1970, served on the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution from 1970 to 1973, and from 1959 to 1972 was vice-president of the Conservation Foundation, based in Washington, USA.
