cutting boom (cutting bar) Part of a cutting machine used to undercut or overcut coal or other stratified material. The cutting machine consists of a rubber-tyred base and a cutter bar 3m long and 380 mm wide, with a chain running along its edge and holding the bits. It is driven by an electric motor.
