Borrelia (family Spirochaetaceae, order Spirochaetales) A genus of flexible, spirally shaped bacteria, which are anaerobic chemo-organotrophs. There are many species, found mainly on mucous membranes in humans, other mammals, and birds. Some are pathogenic: certain species cause relapsing fever and are transmitted by ticks or lice.
