arbovirus Obsolete name for any RNA-containing virus that is transmitted from animals to humans through the bite of mosquitoes and ticks (i.e. arthropods, hence arthropod-borne viruses). They cause various forms of encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) and serious fevers, such as dengue and yellow fever.
