VAS, ISTVÁN
VAS, ISTVÁN (1910–1991), Hungarian poet, playwright, and translator. Grandson of a rabbi but never an observant Jew, Vas converted to Christianity in 1938. Jewish themes are absent in his work, but Budapest, his home city, plays an important part in it. On his 70th birthday he was honored with the highest state award.
