KÁDAR, JÁN

KÁDAR, JÁN (1918–1979), film director. Born in Budapest, Kádar was imprisoned in a Hungarian labor camp during World War ii. Later he worked for the Czech state film studios, and with Elmar Klos made Death Is Called Engelchen, which won acclaim. He became known in the West for the film The Shop on Main Street (1965), which starred Ida Kaminska and won an Academy Award. Kádar was linked with the writers and artists involved in the liberal movement in Czechoslovakia in 1968. In 1969 he directed the American film of Bernard *Malamud's story, Angel Levine.
