JOLOWICZ, HERBERT FELIX
JOLOWICZ, HERBERT FELIX (1890–1954), British legal scholar. Probably Britain's foremost scholar of Roman law, Jolowicz was born in London and educated at St. Pauls School, Cambridge University, and in Germany. After service in World War i, Jolowicz became a barrister and, in turn, reader in Roman Law at University College, London, and then, from 1948, Regius Professor of Civil Law at Oxford. Because of England's common law system, Roman law had been relatively neglected by scholars. Jolowicz established an international reputation with such works as his Historical Introduction to the Study of Roman Law (1932) and his posthumously published Roman Foundations of Modern Law. He was noted for the excellence of his classroom teaching.
