HALEVA, ISAK

HALEVA, ISAK (1940– ), chief rabbi of Turkey from October 2002. Born in Istanbul, Haleva graduated from the Jewish high school there and continued his higher education at Jerusalem's Porat Yosef Yeshivah, from which he graduated with the title of rabbi in 1961. He served as a member of the Bet Din of Turkey's Chief Rabbinate and taught religion and ethics at the Jewish high school from 1963 until 2000. He also taught Hebrew and Jewish religion at Marmara and Sakarya universities in the faculty of theology. He was a member of the European Rabbis Conference. His son Naftali Haleva was a rabbi and member of the Bet Din.
