Stanisław, St or Stanislaus, St (1030–79). Patron saint of Poland. As bishop of Cracow he came into conflict with King Bolesław II and was put to death. Stanisław was implicated in a plot to oust the king in favour of his brother, and his execution was ordered, with whatever admixture of other motives, for treason. His remains were buried under the main altar of Cracow cathedral in 1088, and he was canonized in 1253. Feast day, 11 Apr.
