Archimandrite (Gk., archi, ‘ruler of’, + mandra, ‘fold’). Title given in the early church (later also Archimandret, Slavonic) to a monastic superior. In the Orthodox Church it has become a title of honour; for the Copts, an archimandrite is second only to a patriarch.
