't Hooft, Gerardus
Gerardus 't Hooft, 1946–, Dutch theoretical physicist, Ph.D. Univ. of Utrecht, 1972. He has been a professor at the Univ. of Utrecht since 1977. 't Hooft shared the 1999 Nobel Prize in Physics with Martinus Veltman for elucidating the quantum structure of electroweak interactions in physics. The prize was awarded for 't Hooft's doctoral work in the 1960s and 1970s, which when developed with Veltman enabled physicists to predict mathematically the properties of subatomic particles and of the forces that hold these particles together.
