Sir Frederick Charles Doveton Sturdee (stûr´dē), 1859–1925, British admiral. He entered the navy in 1871 and rose to become (1914) chief of war staff at the admiralty on the outbreak of World War I. In Dec., 1914, he decisively defeated the German squadron under Graf von Spee at the battle of the Falkland Islands, for which he was made a baronet (1916). Sturdee commanded a squadron at the battle of Jutland (1916), became an admiral in 1917, and was made admiral of the fleet in 1921.
