Steyn, Martinus Theunis

Martinus Theunis Steyn (märtē´nəs tö´nĬs stīn), 1857–1916, last president (1896–1900) of the Orange Free State (see Free State), educated in the Netherlands and in England. He was admitted to the bar in 1882 and served as a judge. As president he made an alliance with the Transvaal. He led troops against British forces in the South African War, and he participated in the peace conference.
