Shakhmatov, Aleksey Aleksandrovich
Aleksey Aleksandrovich Shakhmatov (əlĬksyā´ əlĬksän´drəvĬch shôkmətôf´), 1864–1920, Russian philologist and historian. Shakhmatov's many books on the history of the Russian language and the chronicles, among them Studies in Ancient Russian Chronicles (1908) and Outline of the Ancient Period of the Russian Language (1915), brought him international renown. He used the historical method of textual criticism to determine the original version of the chronicle of Nestor.
