Savonlinna

Savonlinna (sä´vōnlĬn´nä), Swed. Nyslott, city (1996 pop. 28,826), Eastern Finland prov., SE Finland. Situated in the Saimaa lake region, it is a resort, inland port, and road and railroad junction, with a large plywood industry, machine shops, and sawmills. It was built around the 15th-century fortress of Olavinlinna (Swed. Olofsborg) and was chartered in 1639.
