Hoyer, Steny Hamilton
Steny Hamilton Hoyer (stĕn´ē, hoi´ər), 1939–, U.S. politician, b. New York City, grad. Univ. of Maryland (B.S. 1963), Georgetown Univ. Law Center (J.D., 1966). A pragmatic centrist Democrat, he served in the Maryland state senate from 1966 to 1979, the last four years as its president. First elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1981 (in a special election), he has served as House Democratic whip (2003–7, 2011–) and majority leader (2007–11).
