Hoyt, Beatrix (1880–1963)

American golfer . Born on July 5, 1880, in Westchester County, New York; died on August 14, 1963, in Thomasville, Georgia; daughter of William Sprague Hoyt and Janet Ralston (Chase) Hoyt; sister of Franklin Chase Hoyt, a judge; granddaughter of Salmon P. Chase, chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court (1864–73).

The granddaughter of Salmon P. Chase, chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court and Lincoln's secretary of the treasury, golfer Beatrix Hoyt was only 16 when she made her mark in the burgeoning game of golf, winning the second USGA Women's Amateur ever held. Hoyt, who remained the youngest winner until Laura Baugh in 1971, went on to win the Women's Amateur qualifying medal for five years in a row, and was also the winner of the championship for three consecutive years. Hoyt retired from the game at age 20, after losing to Margaret Curtis in the semifinal.
