Hohe Tauern
Hohe Tauern (hō´ə tou´ərn), range of the Eastern Alps, S Austria, extending c.70 mi (110 km) E from the Italian border. It rises to 12,460 ft (3,798 m) in the Grossglockner. The Tauern railroad (built 1901–8) traverses the range through a tunnel (5 mi/8 km long). It is a tourist spot for skiers and mountain climbers.
