Hipponax (hĬpō´năks), fl. 540 BC, Greek iambic poet. Banished from Ephesus after insulting the tyrants there, he went to live in Clazomenae. He is believed to have been the inventor of the choliambic, or "limping" iambic verse. He wrote spirited satire, fragments of which are extant.
