Hilgard, Eugene Woldemar

Eugene Woldemar Hilgard (hĬl´gärd), 1833–1916, American agricultural chemist and geologist, Ph.D. Univ. of Heidelberg, 1853. Born in Germany, he was brought to the United States in 1836. An authority on soil chemistry and reclamation of alkali soils, he was professor (1875–1904) of agriculture at the Univ. of California and director of the agricultural experiment station in Berkeley, Calif. His works include Soils (1906).
