Hiles, Henry

Hiles, Henry, English organist, pedagogue, and composer; b. Shrewsbury, Dec. 31, 1826; d. Worthing, near London, Oct. 20, 1904. He was trained by his brother, John Hiles (1810–82), an organist and composer. After serving as organist in the provinces and in London, he went to Manchester in 1859. He was made a lecturer in music at Owen’s Coll. (1876) and Victoria Coll. (1879) before becoming prof, of harmony at the Royal Manchester Coll. of Music (1893). He also was ed. of the Quarterly Musical Review (1885-88). Among his works were an opera, an operetta, cantatas, oratorios, services, glees, and art songs. He also publ, a number of manuals.
