Gladbeck (glät´bĕk), city (1994 pop. 79,930), North Rhine–Westphalia, W Germany, an industrial center of the Ruhr district. Its manufactures include chemicals, electronics, and fabricated metal products. Gladbeck's growth dates from the late 19th cent., when coal mining was the principal industry. The mines closed in 1958.
