Baylor University, mainly at Waco, Tex.; coeducational; chartered and opened 1845 by Baptists (see Baylor, Robert E. B.) at Independence, moved 1886 and absorbed Waco Univ. (chartered 1861). The library has a noted Robert Browning collection. Frank Lloyd Wright designed a theater center at Dallas for the graduate school. The university's medical school was founded (1900) as part of the Univ. of Dallas, and it became affiliated with Baylor in 1903. In 1943 it moved to Houston, and in 1969 it became a separate corporation under the title of Baylor College of Medicine. It was in connection with the Baylor medical school that Michael DeBakey did his pioneer work in heart transplantation and artificial heart implantation (see heart, artificial). Baylor Univ. still maintains a medical center at Dallas.
