WILLIAMSON, HUGH (1735–1819)

Hugh Williamson, mathemetician, physician, and Presbyterian minister, signed the Constitution as a North Carolina delegate to the constitutional convention of 1787. A frequent but not very influential speaker, he was the first to propose the six-year term for senators. He supported ratification in the North Carolina convention and served in the first two Congresses.
