Tanzim, Al-
TANZIM, AL-
"Organization" (plural: tanzimat). A loosely organized network of groups of Palestinian militants in the Occupied Territories who surfaced in the first Intifada (1987–1993) and continue to be active in the al-Aqsa Intifada. It is said to have been run by Mustafa Barghuthi until his arrest in 2003. Information about the tanzim is limited and contested, and it is said that there are tanzimat for each of the PLO factions. The best-known is probably the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade, associated with al-Fatah.
