Khalil, Al-
KHALIL, AL-
Arabic name for the city of Hebron, meaning "the Friend." This is a reference to the Biblical patriarch Abraham, whose tomb is believed to be located in the city. Abraham is known in sacred Muslim literature as "the Friend of God" or "the Friend of the Merciful" (Ibrahim al-Khalil al-Rahman).
