Rawalpindi
Rawalpindi City in Punjab province, ne Pakistan. It grew rapidly in the 18th century, and became a military base after Britain occupied the Punjab in 1849. It was interim capital of Pakistan from 1959 to 1969. Industries: iron, textiles, railway engineering, oil-refining, chemicals. Pop. (1998) 1,406,214.
