Rodríguez Demorizi, Emilio (1908–1986)

Emilio Rodríguez Demorizi (b. 14 April 1908; d. 27 June 1986), Dominican historian. Rodríguez earned a law degree at the University of Santo Domingo and served as ambassador to Colombia, Spain, and Italy as well as in government positions. He was secretary of state, secretary of state for education and fine arts, rector of the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo, and director of the National Archive. He was president of the Academia Dominicana de la Historia beginning in 1965. While director of the National Archive, he made his greatest contribution in terms of collecting and editing Dominican historical documents. Many of the documents were made available for the first time, and many were found when Rodríguez visited all the major European archives. The series Documentos para la historia de la República Dominicana and Relaciones históricas de Santo Domingo exceeded 100 volumes. Rodríguez also wrote Fábulas dominicanas (1946), El cancionero de Lilís: Poesía, dictadura y libertad (1962), and several works on Columbus.
