Pedreira, Antonio S. (1899–1939)

Antonio S. Pedreira (b. 13 June 1899; d. 23 October 1939), Puerto Rican poet. Pedreira's literary works focus on Puerto Rican identity and personality. He proposed the docility thesis of Puerto Ricans and expounded an insular theory of government. Pedreira's travels to Spain brought him into contact with Antonio Machado, Federico García Lorca, Rafael Alberti, Pedro Salinas, and Luis Cernuda. Influenced by Spanish modernism, Pedreira became more protesting and reformist in his writing. Pedreira also analyzed Puerto Rican culture and its intellectual movements.
