Junta Suprema de Caracas

Junta Suprema de Caracas, the highest junta of the Venezuelan government, established by the cabildo of Caracas as a result of the cabildo's defiance of the captain-general of Venezuela, Vicente Emparán, and its effective declaration of independence on 19 April 1810. When the cabildo of Caracas demanded the resignation of Emparán, the Supreme Governing Junta was created to defend the privileges of Ferdinand VII. This junta assumed control of the government of the province of Caracas and sent delegates to the other provinces to obtain support for the decision not to recognize the regency of Spain.

Once its governing authority was established, the junta sent representatives out of the country to win support for the independence movement, abolished the slave trade, eliminated export duties, and called for elections to establish a constituent congress. The junta dissolved once the Constituent Congress was installed in March 1811.
