JAMAICAN ENGLISH, short form JamE. The English language as used in Jamaica. The term is used primarily to refer to the formal speech of educated Jamaicans, but has also been used to refer to JAMAICAN CREOLE in authoritative scholarly works, such as the Dictionary of Jamaican English (1967, 1980). It is the preferred variety of STANDARD ENGLISH within Jamaica and functions as the formal language of the society. See CARIBBEAN ENGLISH.
